Juneteenth is a well known annual Texas tradition, celebrating an historic moment in time when slaves first heard about their freedom on June 19, 1865 in Galveston, Texas - 2.5 years after the Emancipation Proclamation proclaimed the freedom of slaves in 10 states. That moment forever changed the lives of millions. For generations, the event has been celebrated every June with food, rodeos, music, dancing, family, and friends. Texas blazed the trail in 1980, making it an official state holiday. The festivities have spread across America and the poets are bringing the good news to Jack Straw. How did master and slave react to the news? What did that magic moment feel like? What happened when the dust settled? Answers from the minds and mouths of poets. Visit AAWA-Seattle.com for more information about the poets.
